This is the one lesson I learned in Business School: “cash is king”. So, do you want to understand reasons behind a particular economic, social, or political reality in the United States? Just FOLLOW THE CASH. This rule never failed me both as an analyst and as a person.
Corollary:
Whenever you are asking something to anyone in the United States, ask yourself "what kind of MONETARY benefit is this person going to get doing what I am asking?".
